The player known as Joxer joined Liverpool in the Summer of 2003 but left ther Merseyside club earlier this season after failing to settle in the area and feeling homesick.

Town were interested in Kelly then, however the youngster decided to pick Liverpool over both Town and a selection of other clubs including Arsenal, Tottenham and Leeds.

The former Lourdes Celtic teenager was highly rated during his time at the Liverpool academy and it is understood academy director, former Ireland international Steve Heighway was very reluctant to allow him to leave the club.

Described by Liverpool Under 18 academy manager John Owens as an attacking central midfield player who can run at players and make things happen, Dublin born Kelly was top scorer for the Liverpool Under 17 team in the 2003/4 season.

Town are not the only team interested in signing Kelly however, both Celtic and Aston Villa are said to be watching the 17 year olds progress with the prospect of making a move should he wish to try his luck in Britain again.
