Santos in Burnley Talks

33 year old Santos joined the club from Grimsby 12 months ago, firstly on a three month contract before it was extended to a two year deal, and last season struggled to hold down a regular place in the blues starting lineup.

With Town having to let players leave before they bring any in, Town boss Joe Royle admitted that with 3 first team centre halfs already at the club as well as the emergence of Aidan Collins and Gerard Nash, Santos was surplus to requirements.

Speaking to the Official Club Website of the developments, Royle said: "Burnley have expressed an interest in Georges and we have given them permission to talk to the player and his agent.

"Although we have lost Johnny Mac, Jason De Vos has come in for him and we also have Drissa and Richard Naylor at the back and youngsters Aidan Collins and Gerard Nash coming through in that position as well.

"We are also in a situation where we have to let a player go before we can bring anyone else in. It's by no means a done deal that Georges will be on his way to Burnley, we have simply given him the chance to discuss the matter."

Should Santos elect to join the Lancashire club, he will be joining fellow former Ipswich Town player John McGreal for the third time. The two played together both at Tranmere and Ipswich.
