Speaking to the Ipswich Evening Star of Westlake, former Oldham Manchester City and Everton boss Royle said: "Ian has all the equipment for the game as a modern midfield player - he can win the ball and score goals.

"He was a big surprise last season and we were wondering how long it would take for him to be a regular reserve player, but it ended up with him being a senior first choice and I had no qualms about him being the fans' choice as Player of the Year.

"The challenge for him is to go on and take what he did last season into this one. I want him to be in the England Under-21s. If he carries on playing regular football and maintains his progress then I'm sure England Under-21 coach Peter Taylor will get to know about him."
