Wales suffered a desperate 2-0 defeat at home to Austria in their Group Six World Cup qualifier at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff to put an end to any lingering hopes of qualification for Germany.

John Toshack decided to stick with John Hartson and Craig Bellamy in attack, with Rob Earnshaw on the bench, while Ryan Giggs captained the side as he won his 50th cap.

The early minutes were cagey, before Carl Robinson wasted a chance to break the deadlock by heading straight at Helge Payer from Giggs' accurate cross.

Fifteen minutes in Carl Fletcher tested visiting keeper Payer with a low left-foot drive from 25 yards.

Midway through the first half the visitors should have gone in front, but Martin Stranzl fired into the sidenetting when well placed and Danny Coyne was forced into action by Rene Aufhauser soon after.

Giggs almost marked his landmark appearance with a goal just after the half-hour, but Payer stood strong to make the save.

After the interval Wales upped the pace, although Christian Mayrleb fired a good chance high over the crossbar.

Bellamy's cross to Hartson was just flicked off the head of the big striker just past the hour mark and the forward was thwarted in a one-on-one with Payer soon after.

Midway through the half Payer made a fine save to tip over Simon Davies curling effort and 15 minutes from time Delaney did well to deny Mario Haas a clear shooting chance.

Eight minutes from time Austria got the all-important opener as Mayrleb took down a long ball through the middle and laid a pass off for sub Ivica Vastic to smack a left-foot shot beyond Coyne.

Defensive frailties four minutes later allowed Stranzl to drive home a decisive second for the visitors and silence most of the stunned crowd.
