However it was Oxford who scored the first goal of the game, when Tommy Mooney played the ball through to Steve Basham who made no mistake and fired the home side into the lead after just eight minutes.

Pablo Counago, starting up front for Town in a three pronged attack alongside Darren Bent and Dean Bowditch, should have done better on 15 minutes when he found himself in space in the home sides box, but could only fire the ball wide of goal.

Town did however get the game back on level terms 10 minutes later when Jim Magilton neatly played a free kick to former Hartlepool midfielder Tommy Miller who hit a right footer past goalkeeper Cox to the delight of the attending Ipswich Supporters.

Just a minute later Town were to take the lead after a penalty was given against Roget following a foul on Miller in the box. Miller made no mistake from the spot and fired his and Town's second to complete a two minute turn around.

Just five minutes after the restart Town increased the lead to two goals, a great through ball from current player of the year Ian Westlake reached fellow academy product Darren Bent who had no problem finishing from ten yards out to score his first of the pre-season campaign.

Just before the hour mark, Spanish striker Pablo Counago added Town's fourth of the night, and his second of the Summer after more great work from Westlake gave the Spainard room to turn and hit a superb right foot shot past Cox in the Oxford goal.

Shortly after the goal Counago was substituted by town boss Joe Royle, with Finnish striker Shefki Kuqi replacing the former Celta Vigo man.

In the last kick of the game former Oxford man Jim Magilton turned in a Dean Bowditch cross to score his first of the night and Town's fifth to send the blues back to Suffolk with a well deserved victory.

Town Side: Davis, Richards, Naylor, De Vos, Diallo, Westlake, Magilton, Miller (Murray), Bowditch, Counago (Kuqi), Bent.
