McAuley named Ipswich Skipper

The centre back has impressed Town boss Jim Magilton during the pre-season campaign, and as a result has been rewarded with the chance to skipper his new side out onto the field.

It's a straight swap of skippers, former centre back Jason De Vos being replaced by Towns new centre back, a summer signing from League One side Leicester City.

It was a toss between David Wright, Owen Garvan and Gareth himself who would be given the role at the club, all who have been skipper at some point during pre-season.

Meanwhile, long serving Richard Naylor has been given the club captaincy, which mainly involves a communication pathway from the managers office to the squad.

Confirming the News to the Official Club Website, Town manager Jim Magilton said: "Gareth will lead the team out on Saturday against Preston and I'm sure he will grow into the role of skipper here.

"To help him along the way, I've appointed Bam Bam as Club skipper. It's a role that I think he deserves having been a fantastic servant to Ipswich Town.

"He will be a figurehead if you like from the playing side and will work alongside Gareth as well and pass on his experience. He will also be a link between the manager's office and the dressing-room."
