Santos was initally signed on a 3 month period as cover for Town's central defence, which got turned into a 2 year deal before a ball was kicked due to the departure of classy centre back Thomas Gaardsoe to West Bromwich Albion for a reported £500,000.

Since the season has started, the former Grimsby player has been placed in midfield in all of his games so far, but Royle sees him as more of a centre back rather than a midfielder : "I asked Georges to do a job for me in midfield because we had injuries and Matt Holland had gone.

"His best position is at the back and we knew that when we signed him. But we also knew he could play in midfield. From now on we will be looking at Georges as a central defender in the general scheme of things."
