Ipswich players suffered racial abuse similar to that encountered by Arsenal, Liverpool and Fulham players earlier this season in European competitions.

Marcus Bent, who scored the goal that took Ipswich through to the 2nd round of the competition said: "It was very upsetting. You could hear them doing the monkey chants and I was spat on a few times."

Nigerian winger Finidi George said: "I could hear them all the time - it was not pleasant at all.

A statement on the FA's official website says: "We will be seeking urgent talks with UEFA," David Davies, The FA's Director of International Strategy told TheFA.com this morning.

"We need to step up the way in which we are looking at this issue - it is a worrying trend that it is the English clubs who seem to be suffering the most.

We will sit down with UEFA to find new initiatives to tackle this problem."
