"As a professional you have got to expect the unexpected," Edwards told BBC Radio Suffolk.
"In any game you can be called on to play in a position, and so said, so done," he added.
"I thought at first the gaffer was having a bit of banter but there was my name on the defender's list.
"But I took it with all due respect to him and I think I've done fairly well there."
Town have won their last three Championship games, which included a clean sheet against Sheffield United, but Edwards admitted adapting to the new position had taken time.
"I played at right wing-back for Wrexham, but it wasn't the same position as right-back," Edwards said.
"I was like a headless chicken running up and down the right-hand side then because I had too much energy.
"But as the years tick back that energy starts going from a 3.0 to a 1.2 engine.
"This is the first time I've played in a back four in consecutive games. Obviously it requires more discipline, knowing when to go forward. With time things will improve."
