Ipswich Town goalkeeper Christian Walton has spoken out regarding the intense battle for the number one jersey at Portman Road, insisting that internal competition will benefit the club as they prepare for a crucial bottom-half fixture against Fulham on Saturday.

"We've always had a competitive group and the goalkeeping unit is probably the most competitive it has been right now," he told the club's website.

"Going into a Premier League season, you need strength in every position, so it was always going to be the case that we would strive for three, four, or five good goalkeepers at the club at a time.

"For me, it's competition and competition is healthy. It helps me improve, and it helps the other goalkeepers improve.

"I want to be a goalkeeper who has played at the highest possible level and that competition helps to push you.

"My goal is to just play as much football as possible for Ipswich Town, but I also want to be good for the squad, a good person at the football club, to help however I can."

The Tractor Boys sit in the lower reaches of the Premier League table, having collected four points from their opening matches and seeking to bounce back from an away defeat to Everton prior to the international break.

With Fulham also struggling for momentum and level near the foot of the table, Saturday's clash represents a vital opportunity for Ipswich to kickstart their campaign.
