Last updated : 04 October 2003 By Justin Johnson
Darren Bent opened the scoring for the Blues on 36 minutes after good work by Counago but on the stroke of half time poor defending by Town resulted in Republic of Ireland International Gary Breen sneaking in at the far post unmarked to put the scores level.

Just five minutes after the interval the Black Cats were in front thanks to a goal from former Everton man John Oster before Naylor hit back with a well timed header to bring the scores back level just two minutes later to score his third of the season.

However Sunderland were to have the last laugh when Kevin Kyle scored 5 minutes from time to seal the three points for Mick McCarthys side to which Town had no answer.

Town side: Davis, Wilnis, Naylor, Santos, Richards, Bart-Williams, Magilton, Wright, Counago (Mahon 51), Bent, Kuqi (Armstrong 72). Subs Not Used: Price, Nash, Bowditch
