There were no clear-cut chances taken by either side in a disappointing spectacle.

Ipswich's best player, Marcus Bent, had a chance in the 14th minute when he hit a 25-yard shot from inside the left channel which the Preston goalkeeper tipped onto the bar and away for a corner.

Ipswich captain Matt Holland was booked after 21 minutes for showing dissent after throwing the ball away.

Preston's Northern Ireland defender Colin Murdock was booked for a foul on the dangerous Marcus Bent in the 38th minute.

Thomas Gaardsoe was booked for a foal on Ricardo Fuller after 46 minutes and three minutes later Holland hit the post with a 12-yard header from a Jamie Clapham free kick.

Ipswich brought on Pablo Counago for Darren Bent in the 69th minute, but the Spaniard was unable to reach the heights of Thursday when he scored a hat-trick in the 8-1 UEFA Cup win.

He had a shot saved by Tepi Moilanen in the 71st minute and two minutes later Andy Marshall's throw found Darren Ambrose on the left wing but he shot straight at the Preston keeper.

Preston brought off David Healy for Dickson Etuhu in the 77th minute and Moilanen was forced to make another great save from Counago two minutes later.

With four minutes left Murdock's header went just over his own crossbar for a corner as Preston hung on to secure another point.
