Town had looked down and out when Fabian Wilnis received his marching orders when they were 2-1 down in the first half, but they never gave up and ended up taking all three points.

Kelvin Davis saved early on when Steve Crawford was put through, while at the other end, Romain Larrieu picked up a cute flick from a corner by Drissa Diallo.

Plymouth rocked the hosts with two goals in a minute, as first Tony Capaldi crossed for Steve Adams to head home and then Crawford seized on a misplaced Kevin Horlock header to race away from Richard Naylor and drive a shot past Davis.

Both Capaldi and Peter Gilbert had to go off inside 16 minutes through injury, before Town got one back on 24 minutes, Jason De Vos bulleting in a header from a Jim Magilton corner.

Two minutes later, Town were down to ten men when Wilnis, already booked for dissent, lunged in on Keith Lasley and referee Graham Salisbury deemed it bad enough to warrant a straight red card.

Lee Makel went close from distance, while Darren Bent had the ball in the net in first-half stoppage time, but the flag was already up for offside.

Plymouth should have sealed the points after the break as David Friio ballooned an unmarked header from Paul Connolly's cross and then Makel selfishly shot from an angle with colleagues better placed waiting for a tap-in.

The visitors seemed to be comfortable, but Town drew level with nine minutes to go when Bent raced away down the right and Kuqi was perfectly placed to sidefoot beyond Larrieu.

Incredibly, Town then snatched all three points when Kuqi dived to meet Diallo's right-wing cross and the ball zipped off the wet turf beyond Larrieu's right hand.

Kuqi headed a hat-trick chance wide from an Ian Westlake cross, while Plymouth's final chance saw Crawford head over in the four added minutes as Ipswich held on.
