In a game of few chances, the England Under-21 forward pounced on to a Pablo Counago flick to put Town ahead on 83 minutes and then crossed for Counago to seal the win with seconds left.

Millwall will feel aggrieved after having a good penalty shout turned down, and forcing Kelvin Davis into the save of the game to deny substitute Stefan Moore.

Town had the first chance on six minutes when Shefki Kuqi got on the end of Ian Westlake's far post ball, but couldn't force his effort home.

Millwall wanted a penalty on 12 minutes when Jody Morris appeared to be caught by Jim Magilton in the box, but referee Tony Bates, who was well-placed, said no.

Kevin Horlock curled a free-kick narrowly wide before Bent charged down a Graham Stack clearance, only to see the ball fly wide.

Tommy Miller's 25-yarder beat Stack but landed on the roof of the net as Town continued to press, while at the other end, Horlock and Richard Naylor did well to block out Josh Simpson.

Magilton had a shot saved and Bent headed over as Town ended the half on top, but the second period saw little in the way of chances as the match appeared destined to end goalless.

Then, substitute Counago came on to breathe new life into the home attack and it was he who set up the opener, flicking on a Davis clearance for Bent to muscle his way past Matt Lawrence and clip the ball over Stack.

The victory was secured in the final minute when Bent raced down the left flank and crossed low. The ball caught the heel of Darren Ward and held up nicely for Counago to collect and make room to curl the ball home, despite the presence of several visiting defenders.
