Why he had to go

The 3-0 away defeat to lowly Grimsby in midweek was probably the final straw for the Ipswich board.

Ok, so we're in the second round of the UEFA Cup but its our return to the Premiership that matters.

Admittedly, Burley has had his successful times at Ipswich since taking over as manager in 1994 - in April 2001 Burley was named manager of the year after guiding Ipswich to 5th in the Premiership and back into the UEFA Cup in our first season back in the Premiership and was even being touted to take over the biggest job in football at Man Utd.

Since that time there as been a steady decline in Town's fortunes - relegation from the Premiership being the biggest disappointment.

It is a lack of points and our position in the league table that got George the sack - simple as that!!
