However Upson was delighted to be offered a new deal by Roy Keane after initally being told he was allowed to leave the club by former boss Jim Magilton and hopes to finally make his breakthrough and debut for Town in the coming Coca-Cola Championship season.

Confirming the news to the Official Club Website, Upson said: "It was a difficult season for me last year and I did think that I might have to move on but the new manager has come in and it's given me a massive boost that he has given me a new contract.

"Now I have to take the opportunity the manager has given me and show him what I can do and also show my team-mates what I can do. I need to really push on now from pre-season and try and force my way into the first-team here."
