Smith was involved both the first and the last game of the 2008/9 Coca-Cola Championship season for Town, and now hopes to stay injury free and push on and be involved in the first team reguarly next campaign under new Town boss Roy Keane.
Speaking to the Official Club Website, 19 year old Smith said: "To be out for so long, it makes you appreciate the game.
"You see what you are missing out on. It's not a long career anyway and you want to make the most of it. I can't wait to get going again.
"I'm going to keep doing my rehab over the next few weeks because I am not 100 per cent yet and that will set me up for pre-season.
"I want to come back fighting fit and really be ready to push for a place in the first-team when the season gets underway."
