Murphy to fight for Ipswich role

Ipswich Town goalkeeper Brian Murphy has decided to remain at Portman Road in pursuit of first team football.Murphy, 27, made only his second league start of the season against Hull on Saturday and told BBC Radio Suffolk he had considered a loan move elsewhere.

"I discussed that with my own people and different options if, come January, I'm still not playing," he said.

"But I don't want to leave and go 'well, that's it I've given up'. That's not the way I've ever worked."

In a bid to shake up his side after back-to-back home defeats, boss Roy Keane handed Irishman Murphy the number one jersey at the expense of regular first choice Marton Fulop for the trip to Hull at the weekend.

I'm not quite sure what the atmosphere's like in a Norwich-Ipswich game, but hopefully I'll get the experience on Saturday

It was a rare opportunity for the former Swansea man in a season that has seen him feature on just six occasions, with four appearances coming in the League Cup.

"I try to work hard for my place in the team, I suppose if you're left with no other option you have to look at it," he added.

"At the minute that [leaving] hasn't crossed my mind, maybe further down the line if I wasn't playing I'd try and get some regular games. Hopefully it will come with Ipswich."

Whether Murphy did enough to cement a place in Keane's side in the 1-0 reverse at the KC Stadium for Sunday's trip to Norwich City remains to be seen.

City's one-year departure from the Championship meant Murphy, who became a regular last season after joining Ipswich from Irish side Bohemians in January, has yet to experience an East Anglian Derby.

"Hopefully the manager puts me in on Sunday and that's all that matters, the next game," he said.

"Any derby's a good game, there's always going to be a good atmosphere

"I'm not quite sure what the atmosphere's like in a Norwich-Ipswich game, but hopefully I'll get the experience on Saturday.

"Derby games are brilliant, we need a win more than anything, and I don't think the derby will take away that we realise we need to win the game."
