Speaking to the Official Club Website, former Everton boss Royle said: "It's a fantastic achievement. He could have left the Club at the end of last season but thankfully he stayed, worked hard and fought for his place, and he has been excellent.

"He was particularly outstanding early on in the season then he had a little dip but he is showing signs that he is getting back to his best. Well done to the big fella!"
