Former Manchester United midfielder Martin took just eight minutes to open the scoring, after good work from Jon Stead, sliding the ball through for Martin to knock the ball past former Town goalkeeper Lewis Price in goal for the Bees.

The lead was to last for just over ten minutes, after which good work from Myles Weston allowed Ben Stevens to evade the attention of Town skipper Gareth McAuley before slotting the ball past Shane Supple, in the Town goal.

On the stroke of half-time Town restored their lead, with academy graduate Connor Wickham firing high into the roof of the Brentford net from just under 20 yards out after a deflection kindly fell his way.

It was not to be the only goal towards a closing period of a half, as Jordan Rhodes, who spent part of last season on loan at Brentford headed in a cross from Irishman Owen Garvan.
