The Simon Williams Column (30 Aug)

As the old saying goes, 'Enjoy the good times because a bad time is just around the corner', a somewhat pessimistic view perhaps, but such is the nature of supporting a football team, you can never be too sure of the outcome. As we also know though, one minute football is a beautiful game the next it is a cruel one.

The bank holiday weekend fixtures showed everything why this game is so compelling and why we follow our team week-in week-out.

Millwall's new den is a place where we have notoriously struggled, but on Saturday albeit against the league's most under performing team; we played a game, which should've been wrapped up at half time but conceived to stumble across the line edging out 2-1 victors. Still, a win is a win and being away from home was all the more satisfying.

Monday's game brought out the other side of football, and whilst we all have our own opinions about where to point the finger the fact that it has been a very long time since a team has come away from Portman Road with such a margin of victory shows that whilst the home team may have been poor, the visitors must've had something special.

Prior to the match we had got ourselves into a decent league position from our opening fixtures and the fact that we were missing many regular first teamers seemed to have slipped from many people's mind, and indeed for the opening half an hour we seemed in control or at least not in danger of defeat.

Cue, David Nugent yes my feelings about him are the same as any other home fan inside Portman Road yesterday; but you can't take away the fact that he scored two first-class finishes which saw our make-shift backline have the stuffing knocked out of it. Hopefully that's the last time he plays against us in a Preston shirt.

Understandably it was hard to take as a fan, and by half time we're three goals down and nowhere near as outplayed as the scoreline suggested.

I do have a view though on why we succumbed so easily though, and sorry Joe, but I was not happy with the formation from kick-off. Yes, it worked at Millwall away from home, but at home when you're looking to attack from the off, why just the one striker?

Parkin was crying out for some support, and was getting absolutely no service at all even when we were controlling the game, and I felt all the more sorry for him to have to hear the idiots who ironically cheered him every time he won a header.

Let's not forget that on Saturday the guy scored a header, which turned out to be the winning goal with the scars of 20 stitches having just being removed from his head.

I believe that Joe will realise what went wrong yesterday, but for now let's leave it, because September is a crucial month for us, and let's have a bit of optimism, because on the plus side we should have something close to a full strength team by then.

So for now let's take a breather and cast our eyes to the foot of the table, where we see our friends from down the road, evidently not realising that season has started.

As I say, enjoy the good times...
