Player of the Month -- October 2005: Darren Currie

Last updated : 30 November 2005 By Paul Whyatt

At times during October, watching Ipswich was like watching a really bad horror film that lacked entertainment and failed to offer you value for money. You'd have been better off staying at home and mowing the lawn – far much more fun.

Some fans might like that fact we're having our first “pressure-free” season in a very long time. We're clearly not going up, and.... (dare I tempt fate??) we're not going down. We can just sit back and what will be will be.

Sorry – not good enough. This is Ipswich Town, and we fight! Only, errrrr we're not, are we?

A better award this month would be 'Wally of the Month'. Or, on second thoughts, we're called the Tractor Boys so why not stick a load of scarecrows on the pitch and see if they could do any better?

Promotion was never expected this year, but passion and determination always is. So where the heck is it?

Darren Currie is the only player to come out of the month with any credibility with two goals against Crewe and Coventry, but the rest have performed well under par with Joe Royle being forced to dish out fines to those not doing their jobs. Bravo Mr Royle.

Town threw away a healthy two-goal lead against Coventry to draw 2-2, with Currie scoring a delightful free-kick but then failing to finish a thrilling run into the box in what would have won Town the game.

He also had a sparkling first-half in the home defeat to Watford and was always a threat against his old team Brighton at the Withdean Stadium/ Field.

Apart from his shockingly poor penalty miss in the away defeat to Sheffield United, Currie has done well this season but his own individual desire to taste Premiership glory looks severely unlikely.

I just hope Joe Royle sticks around....
